A round lamp overhead, four heads bowed under it, and one surgeon who has pulled his mask down to see for himself. That is the whole story. In Caravaggio's *Incredulity of Saint Thomas*, three men crowd in to watch a finger go into a wound. Here the wound is real and looking is the job. A bare foot sticks out of the dark at the bottom, because some habits of a painter do not wash off.
The brief
A group of surgeons in scrubs leaning over an operating table lit only by the surgical lamp, one pulling down a mask to look, dark theatre around them. Italian Baroque oil painting, extreme chiaroscuro with a single hard light source cutting figures out of near-total darkness, life-size figures pressed close to the picture plane, dirty feet and real faces, deep blacks, warm flesh tones, blood red and dull gold, dramatic diagonal composition, thick glossy oil surface. Museum photograph of the oil painting, dramatic but even gallery lighting, no frame, no text, no wall, no floor, cropped to the canvas edge.
Written to the house rules. The painter's name does not appear.
