A vertical grid of rectangles, most of them white, a few red, yellow or blue, and along the bottom one wide blue band that holds everything up. It is a phone's home screen, and it is also very nearly a Mondrian from the early twenties. He wanted a picture with nothing in it you could name. We turned it into the thing we look at most, and named every square.
The brief
A vertical grid of equal-sized rectangles, most white, a few in red, yellow and blue, a single wide blue rectangle across the bottom. De Stijl neoplastic oil painting, a grid of black horizontal and vertical lines of varying thickness on white, rectangles filled with pure red, yellow and blue, some lines broken into small stuttering blocks of colour like lights along a route, strict flatness, hand-painted edges slightly imperfect, matte surface. Museum photograph of the oil painting, flat even lighting, no frame, no text, no wall, no floor, cropped to the canvas edge.
Written to the house rules. The painter's name does not appear.
