A figure leans on the rail of a long bridge, head bowed, a phone hanging loose in one hand, and the orange sky and blue fjord swirl around him as if the news had reached the landscape first. Two dark figures walk away at the far end. Munch said he heard a scream pass through nature on a road like this one. Here the scream is silent, and on vibrate.
The brief
A figure leaning on the rail of a long wooden bridge at sunset, back half turned to the viewer, holding a phone loosely at their side and staring down at the water, the orange sky and blue fjord bending in waves around them, two dark figures walking away, no hands raised to the face, no open mouth. Norwegian Expressionist painting in thin oil and tempera on rough board, long undulating strokes that bend sky, water and floorboards into waves, sickly blood-orange and deep blue and acid green, one pale mask-like face with hollow eyes and no other faces anywhere, bare cardboard showing through the paint, raw emotional distortion, a sense of dread. Flat frontal reproduction of the painting, the canvas fills the frame edge to edge, even lighting, no frame, no wall, no text.
