Three soft grey rectangles on a pale grey ground, the middle one nudged a little to the right, their edges so faint they are nearly not there. Nothing has arrived yet. Rothko said silence was so accurate, and he meant it as praise. This is the most accurate painting in the room: the three bars of a page that has not loaded, held for ever in the moment before.
The brief
Three soft grey rectangles of slightly different greys on a pale grey ground, almost invisible edges. Colour field abstract oil painting, two or three large soft-edged rectangles of colour floating on a coloured ground, edges feathered and bleeding, thin translucent layers glowing from within, monumental scale, no line, no figure, quiet emotional intensity, matte velvety surface with subtle brush drag. Museum photograph of the large oil painting, dim even gallery lighting, no frame, no text, no wall, no floor, cropped to the canvas edge.
Written to the house rules. The painter's name does not appear.
