Two young men sit on the riverbank in the heat, one hugging his knees, one reading his phone, which is charging from a small solar panel propped in the grass. A paddle-boarder stands on the water. Behind them, a bridge of arches and a factory chimney, still smoking. Seurat's *Bathers at Asnières* had the same chimneys at their backs. The heat has gone up. The chimneys have stayed.
The brief
Young men resting on a riverbank in the heat, one charging a phone from a small solar panel, a paddle-boarder on the water, a distant bridge and a factory chimney. Neo-Impressionist pointillist oil painting, the entire surface built from thousands of small separate dots of pure colour that mix in the eye, complementary pairs of orange and blue and violet and yellow, stiff frieze-like figures in profile, still formal composition, dappled light, a painted dotted border at the edge, matte chalky surface. Flat frontal reproduction of the painting, the canvas fills the frame edge to edge, even lighting, no frame, no wall, no text.
Written to the house rules. The painter's name does not appear.
