The queue folds back on itself across the hall, and every loop holds a different small indignity: a belt coming off, a shoe in each hand, a tray sliding into the scanner. A child in red has sat down on the floor, which is the only sensible response. Bruegel never painted a crowd without a child doing exactly this. The spire outside the glass waits for all of them.
The brief
An airport security hall seen from a high balcony, a snaking queue of hundreds of travelers with rolling suitcases, removing belts and shoes, trays sliding, a child sitting on the floor, harsh skylight overhead. Sixteenth-century Flemish oil painting on panel, a high vantage point looking down over a sprawling crowded scene, dozens of small figures each absorbed in their own activity, earthy greens, ochres and brick reds against a pale winter or summer sky, meticulous detail across the whole picture with no single hero, gentle satire and warmth, matte surface with fine craquelure. Museum photograph of the panel painting, even diffuse gallery lighting, no frame, no text, no wall, no floor, cropped to the canvas edge.
