Start at the bottom left, where two couples have given up on the music and lie in the grass in the evening sun. Then climb: striped tents, a row of blue portable toilets with its own queue, flags, and a stage so far off it is a rumour. Bruegel liked a festival best from the hill above it, where you can see every small drama and hear none of the band.
The brief
A vast music festival field at golden hour seen from a hillside, thousands of tiny figures around tents, food stalls, a distant stage with light towers, people dancing, sleeping, queuing for portable toilets, carrying flags. Sixteenth-century Flemish oil painting on panel, a high vantage point looking down over a sprawling crowded scene, dozens of small figures each absorbed in their own activity, earthy greens, ochres and brick reds against a pale winter or summer sky, meticulous detail across the whole picture with no single hero, gentle satire and warmth, matte surface with fine craquelure. Museum photograph of the panel painting, even diffuse gallery lighting, no frame, no text, no wall, no floor, cropped to the canvas edge.
