He stands with his back to us at the stone wall of a lookout, beside a coin telescope nobody uses any more, and holds his phone up to the valley. Fog fills everything below. The only warm light in the picture is that small screen. Friedrich turned his figures away so that we could look through them into the infinite. This one is looking at the infinite through something else.

A figure in a dark coat seen from behind, sitting on the low stone wall of a mountain viewpoint beside a coin-operated telescope and an iron railing, holding up a phone to photograph a valley of fog below, the small bright screen the only warm light. German Romantic oil painting, a single figure seen from behind standing before a vast luminous landscape, fog and mist dissolving the middle distance, cold blue-grey and violet dawn light, bare trees and rock rendered with meticulous fine brushwork, immense silence and symmetry, thin smooth glazes, an atmosphere of longing. Flat frontal reproduction of the painting, the canvas fills the frame edge to edge, even lighting, no frame, no wall, no text.
