The rocket is a white needle at the tip of a column of gold and white vapour, rising out of a marsh so flat and still that it catches the whole launch upside down. The gantry is a grey smudge. Turner painted light that seems to come from behind the canvas. This light comes from underneath, at several thousand degrees, and he would not have wanted to be anywhere else.

English Romantic oil painting, forms dissolving into luminous atmosphere, swirling vortex of golden light, sea spray and storm cloud, a barely legible man-made structure at the centre of the turbulence, impasto scumbled whites and yellows, warm ochre and cold grey, sublime scale, thin glazes and thick highlights. Museum photograph of the oil painting, even gallery lighting, no frame, no text, no wall, no floor, cropped to the canvas edge.
