Rows of dark circles climb in a steep grid from the bottom left, growing as they rise, and two diagonals of red and magenta slice through them towards a white explosion at the right. It is loud. Kandinsky painted his improvisations as quick answers to music he had heard. This one answers a kick drum at a hundred and thirty beats a minute, in a room without windows, at four.

Early twentieth-century abstract oil painting, floating circles, wedges, arcs and thin black lines in a dynamic composition, primary reds, yellows and blues against pale grounds, geometric forms in tension with free painterly marks, musical rhythm and movement, matte oil surface.
