There are no stars tonight. The sky has clouded over and all the light in the picture pours out of the shop, where it is always three in the morning. Van Gogh painted the café terrace at Arles from the dark side of the street, as a place to stand outside of. The kiosk puts you in the same spot: one customer at the counter, a scooter left where the cart would have been.
The brief
A 24-hour convenience store at night under an overcast sky with no moon and no stars, harsh yellow interior light swirling out onto blue pavement, one customer inside, a scooter parked outside. Post-Impressionist oil painting, thick directional impasto strokes that swirl and vibrate, cobalt and chrome yellow in violent harmony, outlined forms, exaggerated perspective, energetic sky and ground, emotional intensity in ordinary subjects, heavy paint texture casting its own shadows. Museum photograph of the oil painting, even gallery lighting revealing impasto, no frame, no text, no wall, no floor, cropped to the canvas edge.
Written to the house rules. The painter's name does not appear.
