Rain on a glass roof, iron columns, a train waiting, and the commuters reduced to coloured strokes under umbrellas: a red one at the front, a blue one further back. The wet floor doubles everything. Monet painted the Gare Saint-Lazare again and again for its steam. There is no steam any more, so he has painted the rain instead, and it does exactly the same job.
The brief
A modern glass railway station roof in rain, commuters as coloured smudges, umbrellas, reflections on the wet platform. French Impressionist oil painting, broken dabs of pure colour, no black, forms suggested by shimmering light rather than line, lavender shadows, pinks and greens vibrating together, reflections on water, plein-air freshness, thick short brushstrokes, canvas weave visible at the edges. Museum photograph of the oil painting, soft even gallery lighting, no frame, no text, no wall, no floor, cropped to the canvas edge.
Written to the house rules. The painter's name does not appear.
