Rows of tall slim cans in pink, yellow and turquoise, with no names on them, each printed slightly off its own outline. The title says thirty-two. Count them: there are twenty-four. The other eight have been drunk. Warhol printed thirty-two soup cans, one for each flavour, and said he had eaten the same lunch every day for twenty years. The cans have changed. The lunch has not.
The brief
A grid of thirty-two identical unlabelled tall slim aluminium cans in flat garish colours, slight misregistration. Pop art silkscreen on canvas, a photographic image reduced to high-contrast flat blocks of garish colour, repeated in a grid with slight misregistration between prints, acid pink, yellow, turquoise and black, deadpan commercial flatness, screen texture and ink bleed. Museum photograph of the silkscreen canvases, flat even lighting, no frame, no text, no wall, no floor, cropped to the canvas edge.
Written to the house rules. The painter's name does not appear.
Take it home
